Administrative auditing of the Security Intelligence System’s records is entrusted with the Ufficio centrale Ispettivo [Central Inspection Office] of the DIS and the internal audit body of the DIS.

The Central Inspection Office ensures that the activities carried out by the AISE and the AISI comply with laws and regulations, as well as the directives issued by the President of the Council of Ministers.

Inspectors are granted full autonomy and independence of judgment in the exercise of their duties.

With the authorization of the President of the Council of Ministers or the Delegated Authority, inspectors carry out internal inquiries into specific episodes and instances of conduct occurring within the AISE or the AISI.

The internal audit body of the DIS carries out dynamic auditing on the expenses of the DIS, the AISE and the AISI in the course the fiscal year.

Monitoring functions are also carried out by the Ufficio centrale per gli archivi [Central Archives Office] of the DIS, which oversees the security, upkeep and management of the archives of the DIS, the AISE and the AISI.

The Central Archives Office is also responsible for:

• managing the DIS’s central archives
• implementing the provisions governing the operation of and access to the archives of the DIS, the AISE and the AISI
• keeping, in the DIS’s historical archives, the documentation relating to the activities and accounts, as well as the documentation regarding functional guarantees and the related authorization procedures
