The Director General of the DIS reports directly to the President of the Council of Ministers and the Delegated Authority as to the performance of their prerogatives relating to security intelligence.
He is appointed by the President of the Council of Ministers, after prior consultation with the CISR Interministerial Committee.
The Director General’s term of office is four years, renewable once only.
The DIS Director General – Head of the Department’s Staff – is responsible for:
- coordinating the AISE and the AISI when they are operating outside their territorial jurisdiction
- proposing the assignment of the status of officer or agent working in the judicial police for the personnel of the DIS, the AISE and the AISI in the cases envisaged by the law
- authorizing, at the proposal of the Director of the AISE or the AISI, personnel from the intelligence agencies to use cover documents or carry out simulated economic activities
- requesting the authorization from the President of the Council of Ministers to hold internal inquiries
The Director General of the DIS acts as the Secretary of the CISR, participates in the Steering Committee and chairs the Board of Directors.
