The AISI - Agenzia informazioni per la sicurezza interna [Internal Intelligence and Security Agency] is responsible for gathering and processing all intelligence that serves to defend the internal security of the Republic and its democratic institutions from every threat, subversive activity and form of criminal and terrorist attack.

In particular, the tasks of the AISI include:

• intelligence activities carried out in Italy to protect Italy's political, military, economic, scientific and industrial interests
• identifying and countering, within the national territory, both the espionage activities conducted against Italy and the activities aimed at damaging Italy's interests

The AISI is directly answerable to the President of the Council of Ministers.

The AISI keeps the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defence promptly and constantly informed about matters falling within their respective fields of competence.
